Heroes Season 4 , Secure or Not?

by Matej ( Heroes Television)

In an recent interview Angela Bromstad ( NBC’s president of primetime entertainment ) was asked about the show’s near future, Season 3 security and possible Season 4. Here’s what she said:

“‘Heroes’ is very secure,” she says. “We have a great relationship with Tim Kring … what’s important is we never lose sight of being responsible in production. And television is about the characters and the writing, and we want to make sure that that show is on track. But very secure. I think that what Tim is interested in doing is getting back to the core of the show and that it’s these ordinary people with extraordinary powers and that they may have taken on too much in terms of characters and multiple storylines.”

If the show ratings continue to drop, there is a chance the show may become unprofitable. The best bet here to guarantee a Heroes Season 4 is for the ratings to improve as the show nears its Season 3 finale. Maybe Super Bowl Ad will bring in million or two new viewers ?

When Zach Quinto was asked about about a potential Season 4, Quinto said that it is not up to him, but would love to be a part of it!! He was just unsure what will happen with the show because of the background stuff with NBC. Since NBC is bringing new/returning writers onto Heroes, I’d think there was some commitment to a Heroes Season 4.

Here are Season 3 episode ratings so far ( in millions ) :

Episode 13: 7,866
Episode 12: 7,719
Episode 11: 7,995
Episode 10: 7,511
Episode 09: 7,646
Episode 08: 7,849
Episode 07: 8,189
Episode 06: 8,510
Episode 05: 8,753
Episode 04: 8,198
Episode 03: 9,502
Premiere: 10,086

It’s also fair to mention that Heroes had the biggest DVR increase in 2008. among TV Shows and it’s most downloaded TV Show on Torrents every week ( when there’s no Lost ).

*crosses fingers* I wish I could do something. I’ll be watching every episode live of course and I encourage my friends and coworkers to do the same.

Kyle January 28, 2009 at 1:06 am

Im surprised heroes is still profitable considering its lost almost half of its audience and costs 4 million dollars an episode. I think theyll renew it 4 a season 4 if the #s stay steady and stay over 7 million

David H. Lawrence XVII January 28, 2009 at 1:52 am

Are those ratings numbers just the audience number from on-air linear TV viewing the night of the show, or do those have the added in numbers from DVR plays – I ask because I want to be clear on what is being claimed, and I think those may be linear numbers only.

Matej January 28, 2009 at 2:03 am

Those are live+same day DVR (SD) Ratings – viewers watching live, as well as those who played back programs on a DVR on the same day of the initial airing.

Heroes was by far the most downloaded show on Torrents ( while Lost wasn’t airing ) , has great DVR numbers ( not same day) and also online viewing but that doesn’t bring in revenue, not close as live watching.

By the way, nice to see you on here David :)

David H. Lawrence XVII January 28, 2009 at 2:09 am

If those DVR numbers are available, it would be great to see them added in, or side by side, with the numbers you have to give everyone a true picture of the popularity of our show.

Thanks!

Matej ( Heroes Television) January 28, 2009 at 2:37 am

DVR viewing doesn’t meaningfully add to a networks ability to make money, and more people watching shows via DVR isn’t good news for the networks.

Everyone knows that Heroes is one of the most popular shows, just look at online presence – only Lost has bigger one. Abroad, everyone’s watching it ( including me :) ) But here we are talking about networks and their goals – their goal is to make money and live viewing is dropping every week.

I don’t have these numbers, TVbythenumbers.com is reporting about DVR ratings every week but it’s really hard to find the info you need in this mess / they post 10 times a day ), and torrentfreak.com is reporting about downloads.

But Heroes had the biggest DVR increase in 2008. among TV Shows, that’s what I know.

Anissa January 28, 2009 at 3:54 am

Haha…funny about the LOST thing…I watch both shows!

Anyways, I hope Heroes goes on! It’s an awesome show!

herogirl January 28, 2009 at 6:01 am

i wish a could do something. i would run a mile in the 45 degree heat outside if it meant heroes would be secured for at least 3 more years. fugitives is very promising, but then again, so was villians…. but i will watch all the episodes to do my part, and plus NBC cant afford to lose this show, even though the ratings declined the die hard fans are still with it, and unless they wanto get 7000000 hte letters i think they should keep it on.

kwill January 28, 2009 at 10:39 am

I think NBC needs to stop only looking at the ratings in America because this is the second most watched or downloaded show in Japan.(sorry to say next to Prison Break) This is a manga driven country. These people will probably electronically invent something to accomplish what your show is doing! Let Wentworth Miller have a few guest appearances and see how much your ratings will go up! He is a GOD over here!
I also agree that the show needs to go back to it’s roots! Some times it feels like the old A-TEAM series! Shooting a million bullets from guns with an infinite amount of bullets and no one ever dies! Get rid of the the time traveling power! That is killing the show! Now, 2 Peter Patrelli’s are traveling, at one time 2 Hiro’s traveled, the Patrelli father, and now Sylar is capable of absorbing the power of time travel! Let people die and stay dead! Drawing the future is all it needs! Unless the show goes back to it’s roots I think it has reached it’s climax! The writer did a magnificant job of bringing the show this far but over did it to the point that the show can only drag on! Give new actors a chance to prove themselves and kill off most of the character’s you have now!

Tarot January 28, 2009 at 1:06 pm

If I watch live and then rewatch on DVR do I count twice or more? Sometimes I wind up seeing it 2-4 times that way, just in case I missed something the first time through.

And Hello to Mr. Lawrence. You are so scary on screen.

heroesultrafan January 29, 2009 at 5:30 am

Cool, Eric Doyle was here! The ratings are really dipping :(

Krissy D January 29, 2009 at 2:57 pm

I truely do hope to see alot more of heroes, the show has a huge following in Australia and the Asian Pacific region. Though understanding the need to keep the series more family friendly, it is only PG on the current level now and there is room to intensify the characters and story lines, perhaps introducing more of a “paranormal” nucleus as to the origin of the genetic code, with newly introduced, not of this earth heroes. On the level people love sci fi and an introduction of a new species not of human kind would i believe draw in a vast audience….but hey im just a singer :)

kwill January 29, 2009 at 3:44 pm

I agree with Krissy D and Mr. Lawrence! First the numbers will show if you look overseas! The Dvd’s are rented out forget weeks before I can get a chance to rent it! I apologize to say that I downloaded for a faster viewing but I purchased all 3 season’s on Amazon to support the show! Is there any way for the possible cable tv viewing to be up to date instead of a year behind? As for Krissy D! You have an opinion and it doesn’t matter what your profession is! Every Idea is a great idea! Where do you think the writers get bits and pieces from to make great shows we love! Heroes may not last but NBC and their wrter’s will come up with something to grab our attention just as much!

Krissy D January 30, 2009 at 1:25 am

I’m hoping heroes does last, it has a huge potential to expand and grow. NBC obviously does not take into account the sales to various networks across the globe and the viewer ratings, not to mention the national and international sales on the series sets, i agree with you kwill the rest of the world is left lurking too far behind, which is dissapointing.

Johnie snider February 1, 2009 at 1:33 pm

I beleve that NBC should look at everything becuse most of the people downloading or geting them throu netflix(me and all my friends lol) have jobs that stop us from watching it live (+ i hate when it gets to a good part and BAM eat this and buy our car that )

heroes363 February 3, 2009 at 2:18 pm

i watched heroes from the very beginning it is so awesome . i gotta go my teachers coming!

Nikki February 6, 2009 at 9:51 pm

i think they lost viewers because they had too many characters and lost them too quickly.
I think characters like HRG, Nathan and Claire are getting boring.
Heroes lost great characters in Elle, Molly, Micah and Claude.
I watch Heroes online as the BBC hasn’t mentioned commisioning Heroes on british tv anymore

Vorrec February 8, 2009 at 4:31 am

Heroes should end soon. There’s not really much of a point left like there was during season one, or the excitement of something new. I think the main problem doesn’t actually reside in the number of characters, but the fact that not enough time is devoted to new characters before swiping them off the plot and the lack of setting a ‘main protagonist’. I know it’s humanitarian and all, and it worked out quite well in the first season when we could enjoy each of the characters’ stories, but the plot is getting messier and losing its focus. It needs to restrain the audience’s ‘Eye’ to less or we will start getting confused. And somehow I cannot see where the big budget of several million per episode hits in, aside from paying off the big actors. They need to either give a really good ending soon or kill off some of the main characters. They’re getting boring and restraining, and too much time is spent on them. Big reason for loss of audience. And the main reason for their loss of audience is because they listen to the audience in the first place. They should have a pinpoint of where they’re going with the story, but they don’t. This really doesn’t help with ratings. It degrades it and the general morality of the show. Heroes isn’t that much of an Art anymore, it’s a Business show. Most of us still watching are reminiscing over how great the beginning was. That’s te only thing keeping me going, at least. They’re probably going to lose me for the later part of Season 3 if they don’t do something and the show goes on and on. I enjoyed Season 1 so much, it’s a pity the show had to come to this.

is this the raitings for just america or world wide?

Lil Joshy March 2, 2009 at 11:27 pm

I personally think that Heroes should invest in some new characters. I thought Season 2 was awesome because we got Bob, Elle, Adam, Monica, Maya, Alejandro and West as new characters. We got to see Adam at the beginning and the end of discovering powers, where he developed a god-like complex. Elle, West and Bob were already well versed in their powers. Maya and Alejandro only ever had scenes with Sylar, and Maya had like 2 or 3 scenes with Mohinder and Molly, and maybe 1 with Elle.

The only characters the writers have to keep are Claire, Peter, Hiro and Tracy (Ali Larter or whoever she’s playing at the time). Mohinder I suppose is needed as the narrorator. But in all honesty Nathan, Ando, Matt and Noah are more expendable now then ever of the main cast. The later 4 are too important.

I don’t see Matt’s character being developed much further. And I don’t see Nathan surviving Volume 4 with what he’s doing.

My Suggestion keep Claire, Peter, Tracy and Hiro. Bring back Monica and Micah. Maybe bring back Molly if only as a ward to Matt to keep him slightly interesting. Mohinder’s slightly annoying but you can keep him as narrarator. Kill Nathan. Reduce H.R.G.’s role. Other then that BRING IN NEW CHARACTERS. Ando and Sylar have become too large for their original roles. But I can’t see them getting rid of Sylar now after the fact that he almost always gets killed or in a life or death situation and somehow manages to escape.

:)

Tarot March 2, 2009 at 11:43 pm

PetrelliByNature Thanks for pointing that out about the fake court case. Beat me to it :)

Lil Joshy, I don’t think we need quite so many cut but I’d love to see them bring Claude back.

Lil Joshy March 3, 2009 at 7:24 am

Yeah I guess we don’t need SO many characters cut…..but I mean at least 3 Cast Members from Season 1 should at least be moved down to recurring status. You know written out but come back for a guest appearance now and then…like D.L. in Season 2 after dying inbetween Season 1 and 2 as a flashback/ghost/nightmare lol

Basically my point is of the main cast i’d like to see more “moving on” and or dying as opposed to say Hiro stabbing Ando but it’s revealed to be a secret, Sylar getting stabbed in the back of the head….but mysteriously appearing alive 2 months later. Nathan actually dying instead of “nearly” dying in every alternate future and regular timeline set season each year. Claire not going through the same thing EVERY OTHER victim of Sylar’s did and actually surviving it. Nathan not just “waking up” after dying etc etc

Maya simply left after losing her powers which i felt was right. She was tortured both physically and mentally by her abilities, and without them she was free to live a normal life again.

Basically Claire, Peter and Hiro are too important to get rid of. Sylar has become a “every season” threat that the Heroes just can’t get rid of. Sort of like the Magneto to The X-Men. Matt and Nathan i think have run their course. And Mohinder in all honesty was better without the whole “powers” in my opinion since all it did was make him crazy and cause him to act all angry ALL the time. I wouldn’t mind if he lost his powers somehow, or simply died and was looking from “beyond the grave.”

So Keep; Claire, Peter, Hiro, Sylar, Angela (She’s very manipulative which is always fun to watch :D ) and Tracy (She’s too new to get rid of and no Ali Larter is a BAD thing :P )

Think about losing or lessening the characters of; Ando, Matt, Mohinder, H.R.G. (Obviously not all of them, but these characters shouldn’t be kept at the exposure their on when only really Ando seems to be going somewhere remotely interesting in becoming a hero in his own right. They should think about where they want to take Matt and Mohinder that’s original and fresh without “bringing out Matt or Mohinder’s dark side”.

H.R.G is annoying though. :S Wouldn’t mind if he turfed it maybe while protecting Claire.

And Nathan……Nathan, Nathan, Nathan. The God’s (AKA The Writers) are against you since you get killed EVERY SINGLE YEAR, like Twice. It’s time in my opinion for him to go.

Nobody else I can think of sept bring back Micah and Monica. And Maybe Molly. But I really want to see at least 3 new inportant characters next season go through an “origin” story. We Went from like 12 in Season 1. To like 3 in Season 2. To 1 in Season 3.

So Claire, Tracy, Hiro, Peter, Micah, Monica, Angela, *New*, *New*, *New*, Sylar and maybe 2 more people out of Matt, Mohinder, Ando and maybe H.R.G.

That’s 13 which is above the traditional 12 of Season 1/3 and below the 15 of Season 2 :D

P.S. Plus Claude in a Special Guest Star role (:D I too agree with Tarot that Claude should come back at least for maybe another 6 or so episodes) ;)
